Kai Cheen 溪銭 is used to call the gods.
Whenever you are making a request to the gods, the first thing that must happen is connection. The god must first be invited or called before anything else can happen.
Kai Cheen represents the water pathway. Water symbolizes the movement from Preheaven down into Postheaven. In other words, it represents the god sending and influence down to the human world.
The number of Kai Cheen used tells the gods which level should respond.
1 Kai Cheen can connect to one god specifically.
3 Kai Cheen invites local gods.
18 Kai Cheen invites the ancestral court.
24 Kai Cheen invites the Earth Realm court. (RC)
36 Kai Cheen invites the Sky Realm court. (CC)
Kai Cheen answers the question: which gods are being invited to act?
When we put a stack of Kai Cheen together, we don't "count" them, we say THIS IS 36, or THIS IS 24, it's fine. Then spin it around with a stick like the picture, and then you are good. Remember the intention counts more than physical quantity.
