Progress: Lesson 2 / 10
Three Treasures – Trust, Faith & Determination
Trust – you believe because of evidence. Trust is built, not given. If you say you will come to me at 10am and you show up on time, then trust is earned. The more you keep your words and fulfill your promises, the more people will trust you.
Faith – you believe without needing evidence. It is like how a baby simply trusts their parents. “You say so, I believe so.” There is no doubt and no questions asked.
Determination – not giving up, keep trying, and wanting to reach the goal. Just “keep trying” is not enough. You must care about the result too. If a student never skips school but doesn’t care about graduating, that is not real determination. True determination is: keep trying, want the result, face hardship without fear, and never complain.
We often talk about this using a video game example: the HP bar and the MP bar.
HP Bar – this is your faith power, the health of your Tao-heart. When evils attack you, this bar drops and your faith starts to shake.
MP Bar – this is your chi power, the health of your Tao-soul. You use this bar to power up your magic, your skills, and your actions to fight back against evil.
Imagine this: you just got ordained. You invested almost $500. Everything was done for you. You were happy and all set.
Then you had a talk with someone, or a dinner with someone. The next day, suddenly you feel “off.” You don’t feel like coming back. You think, “Maybe this Tao stuff isn’t for me,” and you want to disappear.
Instead of foolishly quitting, stop and look: who or what just knocked out your HP bar? Who was the “evil” that killed your faith so quickly?
Sometimes it is a relative, a spouse, or even a parent. It is not easy to face this, but at least you can see clearly what kind of force around you is trying to stop you from walking the Tao path.
When your faith gets busted by evil, you first need to deal with the source of the problem. This is where your MP bar comes in.
Use your MP to blast back with your magic and knowledge. Cleanse yourself. Do your magic. Use what you learned here to fight back.
Sometimes that means actually using the magic you learned to cleanse and protect yourself. Sometimes it means using the knowledge from the sect to answer people who challenge your Tao, so they cannot easily knock you off the path.
For example, a new disciple might face someone from another religion who questions them or tries to shake their belief. This pushes the disciple to quickly learn more about the Tao, so they can defend themselves and stand firm.
When the HP bar is low, in games you drink a red potion. In real life, this “red potion” is the blood from your Tao – the support from your masters and uppers.
When your faith is shaking, contact your master and the lineage. Ask for help. The more you bond with the Tao, the more your HP bar will refill.
Sometimes a talk with your master, a proper cleansing, or getting guidance will already help you feel your faith coming back. This is how the Tao “feeds” your HP bar.
When trust is not there yet, use faith to fill it in.
When faith is down, use trust to build it back up.
By being a good disciple — keeping your promises, being honest, and staying truthful — you build more trust with your master and the Tao. That trust then supports your faith and keeps it stable.
When trust, faith, or determination starts to fall, do not hide it. Update and ask for help immediately.
