Summary of Tao Te Ching Chapter 1-10

Summary of Tao Te Ching Chapter 1-10

Tao te ching

After our series of postings translating the Tao Te Ching chapter 1-10, I am sure it did open your vision to something new, something that makes sense to you, rather than just a bunch of vague babbles with no subject defined. Tao Te Ching is a very introductory book, and don’t expect this to be the “master book” of Taoism. It’s actually one of the baby books, for “babies” of Taoism to read before they are even babies. I guess it’s overrated in the western market!

Remember that all Taoism sects and lineages are not the same. They are all connected to their own "Tao".  Read up "what is Taoism" to know more!

However, it is a lot of wisdom from the first 10 chapters which we all know already, but we just don’t pay attention to them. Let us summarize the 10 chapters in modern words and bring out their teachings again in a summary format.

Chapter one

Chapter two

Chapter three

Chapter four

Chapter 10

Chapter 1

Find a leader that can lead you instead of being your own leader. Get a name from the leader, because it makes you part of the system. Those who are still outside of the door will always look at what’s the power of this path, the wow and the fancy moves.  After you got a name, you will be all focusing on the theories, the mechanics and the details of how things work.  With just the change of having a new name, it brings you to enter the door and sparks up your journey of Taoism.

Chapter 2

You see things from a path that seems good to you, it means you need it. You feel the inside is nice, it is because it will benefit you. You get into the door of a path, become a disciple, to be getting what you don’t have now, to improve beyond your limits, and to be affected, nourished, and be changed to a better you, so that you can move to a better future, and get yourself out of the current state.

Chapter 3

A master will spend all his energy and heart on the teachings, and he will always fill his guts up with knowledge. With the insane amount of time, energy and heart put into the path. All you need to do is follow the teachings and you will get what you don’t have right now. If you don’t get moving, you won’t move on. It’s time to move your butt.

Chapter 4

What happens if your current Tao crashes with this one you have your eyes on? No worry, everyone gets all worked up when they just found out something better is actually there waiting for them, and they are stuck with the old path. If you be patient, stay still and calm down, let this path files away your rough edges, and understand the content more, you will harmonize with it and like it. Stay and hang on!

Chapter 5

Hang on tight!  Your job in the lineage as a disciple is to hang on to the connection and force yourself to stay. As long as your heart is here, and you are loyal to the path, you will benefit from the Tao of this path.  You will be filled with energy, and be given pressures from the outside, but that is all for your own goods, like exercise, will get you some pain, but you will gain!

Chapter 6

The power and vision of the lineage will never die because there are always people who want to learn.  The roots of the lineages are built on the disciples and knowledge seekers.  You might not see it that way, but it is always like that.  Choose a lineage that is not busy and has the space for you.  That’s right, there are so many sects, but some are just full or too busy, even your got in, you won’t get to learn much!

Chapter 7

The good masters will always think in the shoes of the disciples and knowledge seekers, like a chef who cooks and listens to feedbacks to adjust his cooking. That is why the lineage or system can go on and on because it will adjust itself according to the disciples it accepts and teaches. The good lineage is never “selfish” and think of their own point of view only, and that’s why they are still in business.

Chapter 8

The wisdom and benefits from the Tao in a path is like water, it goes into you like rain, and it soaks into all the weakest spot of you first. Which means, you will get worked up and such when you are made to see your own ugly side.  No worry, you are in a good lineage, let your heart stick to it and be taught, don’t mess up the classroom, be a good kid, and so we can get things done on time together!

Chapter 9

Sustaining is hard because even you are given harsh rules or physical controls, it won’t control you for long.  Even you are given all the wealth, you can’t hold on to it for long since you didn't earn it yourself. Therefore, the master will only do his best to teach and then back off to let you choose what to do, that’s how the Tao teaches.  The school teaches, but it’s the disciple himself that brings him success.

Chapter 10

You are treated like a baby in the lineage, because you are being treated with love and care, given the best teachings, and you can see that the teacher doesn’t get anything by doing all these to you. It is because you as a disciple should learn to give back. You see how the master teaches you?  Time to learn the virtue and give back to where you get your knowledge from.

At last, we suggest you read "concluding magic" and watch a video talking about Tao and Te:

After reading the Tao Te Ching summary 1-10, I am sure you have learned the essence of it already, which is to take the first step and “enter the Tao’s door” to start learning.  Picking a path that fits what you need is not easy, but if you come by our content and think that we look good to you, and the stuff makes sense, then you should consider this path.  Ordain today to start learning for real!
